A weekend of r&r at Topsham Lock self-catering cottage on the banks of the River Exe in Topsham
Nestled in a peaceful conservation area between the banks of the River Exe and the Exeter Ship Canal in Devon is Topsham Lock Cottage – a fantastic place to strand yourself when in need of some r&r. This beautiful, cosy cottage dates back to 1832 and was recently refurbished by local lady, Vivianne, who immediately saw its potential as a special place to stay. Indeed, the fact it can only be reached by boat or bicycle only adds to the charm of this quirky holiday hideaway.
As one might expect, the cottage has views to die for, overlooking fields, marshland and water on all sides. There are plenty of footpaths and bike trails to potter along and take in the scenery or pootle to the pub, or if slightly more lively activities are required then the affluent town of Topsham is just a hop across the river. Take the ferry or book a private crossing, and once ashore enjoy the lovely independent shops, cafes and restaurants on offer.
You really won’t want to venture any further. Throw a crabbing line off the quay, commit the views to canvas, scour the marshes through your binoculars, light the log burner and put your feet up for some pure holiday bliss.
Topsham Lock Cottage is run by Vivianne Arendel and is available for rental all year round apart from the months of June and July when it transforms into a lovely cafe. The cottage sleeps up to 6 people with a week’s stay starting at £200. For bookings and further information see Owners Direct. Please note that due to the close proximity to deep water the cottage is not suited for small children.
